In the 1940s when electric guitars were still in their infancy, inventor Leo Fender decided that he could improve upon the amplified hollow-body instruments which were in popular use at the time but implementing a simple solid-body design. He also believed he could streamline the manufacturing process. Leo Fender was right, and since 1946, his innovations have changed the world. Across all genres of music—rock, country, jazz, R&B and others—artists revere iconic Fender products.
Consider the Fender Telecaster. Introduced in 1951, it was the first Spanish-style solid-body electric guitar ever to be mass-produced. Or how about the Precision Bass guitar? Unlike its predecessor, the ungainly stand-up acoustic bass which had to be plucked and which was beginning to get lost under now-amplified guitars, the Precision Bass had frets and could be played like a guitar. This was a truly historic contribution to the world of music—such a simple idea, yet one that no one had thought of before Leo Fender.
Due to poor health, Mr. Fender sold the company to CBS in 1965. While the company grew steadily for the next two decades, CBS’s lack of understanding in matters of music eventually led them to sell the music to a group of employees in 1985. This was a positive development which put the Fender legacy back into the care of people committed to creating the world’s highest quality guitars and amplifiers.
The Fender company states that it is their intention to continue to champion “The Spirit of Rock-n-Roll (slogan trademarked)” and to exceed the expectations of their customers worldwide. They continue to make their iconic guitars, along with professional audio equipment and accessories such as strings, straps, cases, and replacement parts.
Well-known artists who have used and who recommend Fender guitars include Buddy Holly, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Mark Knopfler who play (or played) the Strat, and Vince Gill, Merle Haggard, Muddy Waters, Brad Paisley, and Jimmy Page who play (played) the Telecaster.
